What is PVC/UPVC, and why does it survive monsoon?

The Material, Explained Plainly

It's a board, not a brand name

PVC and UPVC are rigid polymer boards manufactured in solid colour all the way through. There's no veneer, no plywood core, and no separate laminate layer bonded on afterward.

Plywood, by comparison, is layered wood veneer glued under pressure, then finished with laminate, mica, or paint โ€” and every one of those layers is a place monsoon humidity can get in.

Full Comparison

PVC/UPVC vs. plywood, attribute by attribute

Base Material
Solid polymer, self-coloured
Wood veneer + adhesive
Surface Finish
Factory-finished, no mica needed
Requires laminate or paint on-site
Water Exposure
No absorption โ€” safe in kitchens & bathrooms
Swells and delaminates over time
Termites
Contains no cellulose
Vulnerable unless heavily treated
Cost Stack
One material โ€” 40โ€“50% lower
Plywood + laminate + edge-banding + paint
Installation
Faster โ€” arrives pre-finished
Slower โ€” on-site finishing adds days
Where It Matters Most

Three rooms where monsoon hits hardest

01

Kitchens

Splashing, steam and spills are exactly what breaks down plywood first. PVC has nothing to absorb.

02

Bathrooms

A PVC door doesn't swell shut in monsoon season the way a wood-core door can.

03

Ground-Floor Storage

Wardrobes near ground level are where termite colonies start in humid months. PVC removes the food source.

Material FAQ

Questions people actually ask us

What exactly is PVC/UPVC board made of?

Solid polymer sheets manufactured in a single colour throughout โ€” unlike plywood, which needs a separate laminate or paint finish.

Is PVC/UPVC furniture actually waterproof?

Yes โ€” the board doesn't absorb water, so it won't swell, warp or delaminate, even in humid weather.

Why is PVC cheaper than wood?

Pre-finished boards remove the laminate, edge-banding and paint steps plywood needs.

How does PVC resist termites?

Termites eat cellulose. PVC contains none, so there's nothing to feed on.
